Supporting South Dakota Youth: May is Foster Care Awareness Month

 – By

May marks Foster Care Awareness Month, a time to recognize the critical role foster care plays in providing safe, nurturing environments for children who cannot remain with their biological families. This month serves to honor foster families, raise awareness about the needs of children in care, and encourage community involvement in supporting these vulnerable youth.

Foster Care in South Dakota: A Snapshot

At the end of fiscal year 2024, South Dakota had 1,710 children in foster care and only 824 licensed foster homes (SD Department of Social Services, 2024). Many of these children come from complex and challenging backgrounds. Sadly, Native American children are significantly overrepresented in the foster system, accounting for about 72% of youth in care statewide. This highlights the urgent need for more culturally responsive support and long-term prevention efforts.
